I was fortunate to work with Wendy as she led the WWW project at KICS 2019-2020. In September 2019, I joined Wendy and the crew for a visit to the local schools to access needs; this was a necessary follow up visit after the springtime meeting had been affected by the local revolution. We dropped off a teeter totter for the preschoolers at the Old French school, delivered art-paint and paper supplies, and checked a large potable water tank that had been provided the year before at a local school. Now, we were visiting to assure these schools of KICS high school students' intentions to fulfill new needs, practical & aesthetic, and arrange a whole school visit. The fact that this project had continued to preoccupy the minds of these students and Wendy's is a testament to their devotion to goodwill. On this September, despite these settings being very overwhelming and intense, the students showed a great sense of responsibility and pride. Wendy guided and provided the input to me so that I comprehended the decisions that brought us to this moment in the project. While she assisted the kids, she also met with the community of elders at the various local schools to confirm the projects . All along she provided warm smiles and assuring words. These were not easy situations to maneuver. Over the next months we met to try to make arrangements for the whole school participation in February. Wendy was able to make magic happen with her gentle tenacity and open grace for global issues that matter. Wendy made WWW successful for the schools and the kids; the kids, in turn, made it successful because of the love of community and the selflessness they learned to emulate. The stress of covid was already upon us, but we did not know. Somehow I would like share photos that I snapped over the months leading up to the final event: on-site projects and celebratory sports event at the stables, February 2020.

It is without hesitation and with great pride that I recommend Ms. Bekkenk. She is an outstanding and hard-working educator who strives to develop principled and reflective inquirers. She pushes her students to achieve and to succeed and will not stand by and accept when a student does not work to his/her full potential. Ms. Bekkenk is motivated and enthusiastic and she develops self-reliance in her students. Through her instruction, you can see that she believes strongly in a model of 'release of responsibility.' You can also clearly see and she believes strongly in promoting life skills, especially critical thinking, in her students. Students in Ms. Wendy's class learn to, throughout the time they are lucky to spend under her tutelage, stand on their own two feet and to function in a challenging world with self-reliance and independence.
