Jim was a great boss to work with. I say with instead of under because he gave his employees, whether on staff or under contract, the free reign needed to produce their best work. This is because he always had in mind what would create the best home, best public building and best coastal community that we all came together in our respective disciplines to create. This meant establishing an environment that allowed beauty and innovation to rule every project and then supported and coordinated with our in-house construction department to help assure that those concepts and details were realized. Often not an easy thing to straddle but he managed to do it, whether it was a small honeymoon cottage or a major marina. He allowed me the opportunity to correct some aesthetic shortcomings I brought to his attention regarding Bald Head's new ferry landing. Although already long into DD drawings, he arranged an opportunity for me to put those concerns and alternate design ideas to the Island's owner and then when approved facilitated my continual coordination of the new direction with the architect of record. His orchestration of that shift in plan between all the parties transformed the project. This was because, then as always, he was primarily focused on the true purpose of the project; as an authentic representation and introduction of Bald Head Island that would be the best welcoming and memorable experience for every visitor. Any company that hires Jim in a leadership position to guide their project or community and those fortunate to work with him will very much benefit from his talents, skills and magnanimous personality.
