I am working with the 7-8th grade concert band, 9-12th grade concert band, and 9-12th grade jazz bands in the last four weeks of school. Due to the limited amount of time available, we are exploring previously performed pieces in new ways so that students can focus on further developing important skills (i.e. listening, clear and contrasting articulations). Students are encouraged to push themselves to their limits and to have fun while they are learning and rehearsing themselves; this is designed to promote community and camaraderie within the ensemble as a whole. Outside of teaching duties, I have been working the department chair to prepare the band program for the 2015-2016 academic year through budgeting and organizing the band room, band director's office, and music library. I teach PreK - 5th grade students in a variety of settings, including general music, chorus, and recorder ensemble to foster understanding of concepts in rhythm, notation, and technical skills. I work to foster respectful relationships with my students in order to create a positive and supporting learning environment for them. I also assist my cooperating teacher with administrative tasks to ensure that the classroom is set up to run smoothly.

FSSA is an auditioned performing arts high school located in Queens, NY. While there, I conducted two high school bands with challenging (NYSSMA Level 4 - 6) repertoire to provide the high school's high achieving students with appropriately difficult repertoire. I also led lessons designed to improve the students' technical skills on their instruments in one-on-one and small group learning environments. I also taught a 9th grade musicianship course for all music majors (e.g. vocal, string, and band). This course was designed to rectify differences in the students' background knowledge. Show less

I performed with the folk group at Mass to provide beautiful music as backdrop for the ceremony. Because of this performance opportunity, I have been able to develop improvisational skills by playing from guitar chords and lyric sheets rather than standard notation. I performed concerts on campus and for May 2011 and 2012 Commencements in order to provide entertainment and enhance the ceremonies, respectively. Through these opportunities, I deepened my understanding of band repertoire and noted differences between directors’ rehearsal styles in order to determine which strategies are most effective from a student’s perspective. As a member of the concert band I was able to perform in Ohio (including at Severance Hall in Cleveland), Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Brazil, London, Paris, Rome, São Paolo, Rio de Janiero, and Barcelona.
