The Goodwin-Niering Center for the Environment’s selective Certificate Program in Environmental Sustainability has students explore contemporary environmental issues in depth and through an interdisciplinary lens in seminar classes from the spring of the sophomore year through their senior year. In the seminars I have been in, our topics have been focused on climate change, race and the environment, and the waste system. During the sophomore year, students conduct a service learning project with Avalonia Land Conservancy. I worked to expand Avalonia’s Hike and Seek program as well as conducted outreach for them at a local farmers market. During the senior year, students complete a Senior Integrative Project (SIP) which combines targeted courses, a summer internship, and personal research. In the spring of 2021 I completed my SIP which was focused on the philosophy and ethics of the zero waste movement and whether or not we as individuals should strive to live zero waste lifestyles.
