    • Fundraising Campaign Supervisor
      • Oct 2018 - May 2019

Led a campaign that reached thousands of alumni, generating roughly US$50,000 in donations, with an average donation of US$15-20. Almost the entirety of the money raised by this campaign was directed by the donors to the Alumni Scholarship Fund, which provided 22 full scholarships to students from all over the world, including tuition, room and board, and a stipend, given to students based on an assessment of both merit and need. Due to the success of the campaign, an additional student scholarship was added compared to the previous year. Worked with permanent Alumni Relations staff to establish and implement preferred language for discussing the university's expansion to Vienna, as well as the political difficulties facing CEU in Hungary. Provided written and oral communication with Alumni Relations permanent staff, as well as potential donors contacted by the callers supervised. Managed and supervised a team of 10-12 student callers, including providing constructive feedback, organizing caller schedules, and running weekly staff meetings. These meetings provided an opportunity to go over statistics about the campaign thus far, as well as to share and celebrate successes and workshop solutions and best practices for difficult calls. Trained 10-12 student callers to use the Mole fundraising and Sysco internet phone calling software, and provided technical support for student callers. Show less

    • Research Assistant
      • Jan 2018 - Jul 2018

Researched, analyzed, and coded political speeches from the United Kingdom for elements of populism, nationalism, and social conservatism, fulfilling specific requirements for time period, politicians, and speech occasions covered. All speeches were evaluated against rubrics created by the academics leading the project, which scored six different aspects of populist rhetoric. For each of these, specific quotations were compiled to justify scores, with all speeches ultimately given a score from 0 (no signs of populism) to 2 (extremely populist, bordering on ideal populist discourse). These scores were compared between research assistants and, where necessary, discussed and mediated with professors to arrive at a mutually agreeable score. The goal of the project was to create a broad index of objective and comparable scores for elements of populist discourse present in speeches by political leaders, in order to interrogate relationships between populism and other discursive elements, such as social conservatism, nationalism and nativism, gender politics, law, foreign policy, and political party interactions in Europe and the Americas from the end of the Cold War to the present. The scale of this database allows for comparisons not only between states but within one state over time, allowing researchers to track changes in rhetoric alongside other variables. More recently, the project has been expanded to the interwar period, in order to document the interplay of populism with the rise and maintenance of fascist regimes. Contributed to an index now available through CEU's Intellectual Themes Initiative for use by researchers in the field. Several papers have now been published which draw directly on this dataset, exploring a broad range of topics on populism in Europe specifically, as well as on broader themes of populism's effects on rhetoric and political discourse.
