In each cohort, I ask the instructors from other cohorts to send me their best students to help assist my own students that are in the beginning of the program. Sherman was one of those chosen students and has helped a considerable amount in the classroom. Sherman has volunteered his own time to help others in the program while finishing up the program and also working full-time as a software engineer during the day. While assisting in the classroom, Sherman showed he was not only knowledgeable, but was able to easily explain and solve complex subjects with ease. Sherman also brings a sense of quiet humor and a relaxed nature to the classroom. Sherman has many years of experience in software development, but he's still excited about the newer technologies, especially if they're related to JavaScript. It's difficult to find senior developers that are more interested in the newer technologies than being stuck in some of their old ways. I have also seen Sherman leading groups of students both old and young and I think Sherman has a natural aptitude for leading engineering teams. I highly recommend Sherman for any type of software development position and you would be lucky to have him.

Sherman and I studied and worked together during our 6 month Coding Bootcamp at UCLA Extension. In our class of about 25 people Sherman clearly demonstrated his solid engineering experience and leadership qualities. I can name countless times where I have asked Sherman seemingly obvious questions that he never hesitated to help me solve - even on the weekends during odd hours. He would always get back to me and wouldn’t stop helping until the problem was solved. Sherman taught me a lot about mySQL Databases and helped me put together a very cool CLI application that I would not have been able to complete without his guidance. He always shows up to class early and leaves class late usually because he is helping other people. He is a great mentor and honestly just a good friend! I highly recommend Sherman and hope to work with him more in the future.

Leading one of the most talented teams within Lob, focusing on operating with a hack-a-thon mentality by developing and curating product ideas, building proofs of concept, determining viability, and iterating on development or moving on to the next idea as needed. Drove the development of a Shopify app increasing our product's exposure to over 1.7 million potential customers and potential additional revenue of over $4 million/year at our intro pricing. Additional eCommerce platforms will bring additional exposure and revenue. Encouraged engineering team to seek out performance and cost enhancements that resulted in reducing our API response times by nearly 50% and our costs by over $150,000/year. Enabled the team to use machine learning to improve the accuracy of the addresses we verify with the result of beating our closest competitor's accuracy by several percentage points. Moved the team's health metric to a previously unseen 96% overall satisfaction rate - higher than any other team in the company. Met and beat more yearly roadmap goals than any other team at Lob in 2021. Had 100% retention during the Great Resignation of 2021/2022. Show less

Led a small development team in the complete redesign of legacy applications. Was integral member of acquisition team, responsible for all technical conversations with potential acquirers. Built applications using ReactJS on the front-end with C# and NodeJS REST APIs on the back-end. Moved mission-critical applications from desktop-only to web-based and thin-browser* served applications. Improved performance from less than two hundred transactions per minute to over ten thousand transactions per minute. Built software and its underlying architecture to enable the company to make the leap from zero growth in the last several years to having more sales opportunities in the last six months than in the previous ten years combined. Using previous experience as an entrepreneur, led the team to develop features and benefits to the software that the industry desperately needs. Enjoyed working with and mentoring junior developers and helping them not only become better engineers, but to grow in their careers and expand their horizons outside of the office. *Thin-browser: A term defined in-house to describe a custom browser secured so that the user cannot tell they are using a web application and are unable to use traditional browser keystrokes/menu options and tools with (i.e. right-click, developer tools, etc.).
