Supplemental Instructor: Physical Chemistry for Non-Chemistry Majors
-
Sep 2019 - Jan 2020
Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions are informal, peer facilitated review seminars for a particular course and section and sessions meet regularly. SI started at UMass Amherst in 1998 with one Chemistry section and a few hundred student visits. We now support 51 sections, with 102 SI sessions running per week, and over 40,000 student visits annually. SI is only available for courses which an instructor and LRC have mutually agreed upon. During SI sessions, students review course content, compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and learning strategies. A student who has successfully completed the course, is hired and trained by the LRC, audits the course again and leads the course as a SI leader. Research has found that groups developed around an academic program have a positive impact on students' academic adjustment and performance. Show less

Barista

May 2018 - Jan 2019
Marino’s Cafe is the vision of Chef Anthony Marino and co-owner, Victoria Farnsworth. Founded in 2008 in downtown Beverly, their plan for one of the city’s very first scratch kitchens came alive with handcrafted fresh foods, capturing the taste buds of many. Their dream gave way to a menu full of vibrant, flavorful foods and a casual, sit-down or carry-out experience. In 2015, this passionate pair took a leap of faith and moved the restaurant to 100 Cummings where they’ve flourished, refined their path along the way, and continue to create nourishing foods that keep ‘em coming back for more. The Castle: A Board Game Cafe

Barista/Server

The Castle started as an idea of Ryn and Kevin Grant while they were attending college on the north shore. They wanted a place for everyone to feel welcome to spend time hanging out and building community. After they graduated and were married, they remembered the fun times they had in their dorms, playing tabletop games with their friends. With that idea in mind started the process of making The Castle- the first board game cafe in the north shore. At NEB, I honed by basic biotechnology skills of pipetting, record keeping, solution preparation, as well as gained experience working with several biochemical assays. While being mentored by Gregory Lohman, Robert Bauer, and Thom Evans, I worked on expressing and purifying novel replisome proteins from T4 Bacteriophage. With these proteins, potential interactions with T4 DNA Ligase were studied using fairly straight forward pull-down and DNA ligation assays.
