    • GIS Technician Intern
      • May 2019 - Aug 2019

Hired again as an Independent Contractor for the summer, I continued aiding the GIS Office of Dearborn County Government, an internship that I began during my Winter Term months prior. Working with both the Surveyor's Office and Planning and Zoning Department, I was able to work on larger GIS projects for the county. I updated and fixed errors in zoning districts for various towns in the county, created documents and maps to be used during meetings between City Managers and the Assistant County Planner. I created shapefiles for official county maps to be distributed to fire and police departments throughout the county. In an effort to update service area boundaries, I also contacted utility and service companies that provide water, sewer, electric, natural gas, and telephone services across the county.

    • Archaeology Intern
      • May 2019 - Aug 2019

As an Archaeology Intern for Cincinnati Museum Center during the summer of 2019, I worked in the laboratory at Geier Research and Collections facility. In the lab, I learned to identify, clean, and label artifacts such as pieces of bone, flint, pottery, rock, and shell. I learned the techniques of water screening and flotation, with backs of sediment and artifacts collected from archaeological sites. With some experience working with GIS, I was also able to update the GIS database with new archaeological finds, marking and describing the units and features excavated this summer. During the first four weeks in July, I worked full-time at an archaeological dig with Cincinnati Museum Center, excavating the Hahn Site. I learned how to properly measure and stake off a grid, dig a plow zone, dig 10 centimeter levels, dig horizons, carefully excavate and retrieve artifacts, and backfill our units. At the end of the summer, I was able to present my experience and findings to the staff, interns, and volunteers at Cincinnati Museum Center's Union Terminal.

      • Dec 2018 - Jan 2019

Hired as an Independent Contractor, I worked as an intern with the GIS Office for the Dearborn County Government for six weeks during DePauw University's Winter Term. My duties primarily included updating and adding to our current data and maps, on topics such as child care facilities, adult health care facilities, churches, railroads, recycling centers, schools, and historical sites in the county. I also assisted the Department of Planning and Zoning, by assigning address ranges to road center lines throughout the county.

The summer between my sophomore and junior years at DePauw University, I had the opportunity of working as part of a 6-student research team, alongside the head of the Department of Geosciences. Our research was entitled, "Suspended Sediment Sources and Transport Distances in the Big Walnut Creek Watershed, Putnam County, Indiana." Through this research, I learned to conduct grain size analyses of the point bars along Big Walnut Creek, how to measure the velocity and discharge of the stream using a current meter, measure suspended sediments, and study radionuclides present in the sediment. At the end of the summer, we were able to present our research methods and findings to DePauw University faculty, staff, and students, as well as the greater Greencastle community.
