It is a pleasure to have Koen in our team. He is an intelligent engineer with an extensive knowledge in nucleair technology. Passing this knowledge to other people in a calm way is one of his strong suits. As an engineer he is keen to expand his experience and get to the bottom of new subjects. Koen never backs down from a challenge and deadline don’t scare him. Furthermore he is a social teamplayer who is able to adapt to new situations quickly.

I worked in the department of Dismantling & Decontamination on the BR3 decommissioning facility of SCK-CEN. More specifically I was assigned to the group of radiological characterization. In this group I helped plan and perform measurements on standard and non-standard radioactive waste packages. By using gammaspectrometry, we calculated the activity and/or the isotopic composition of the radioactive waste and also determined, in some relevant cases, whether the activity was below the free release level. I have been on a one-year internship at the SCK-CEN for my master thesis (Optimalisation of neutron field characterization). During this year I developped an algorithm that can calculate the neutron dose more efficiently and correctly. It takes into account the energy and angular dependence of the neutron dose and the possible energy and angular dependence of the detectors used in the measurements.
