• Development of a novel disk SPE procedure for extraction and preconcentration of nitro-aromatic compounds (nitrophenols, nitrocatechols, nitroguaiacols, nitrosalicylic acids) from snow and rainwater samples.• Transfer and optimization of an analytical method based on LC/MS (single quadrupole MSD equipped with an ESI source) for the analysis of nitro-aromatic compounds in atmospheric particulate matter and snow.• Sample preparation and LC/MS analysis of large sample sets collected during different sampling campaigns, as well as final data analysis and presentation.• Management of the workflow of a small analytical lab within the Multiphase Chemistry Department.

• Development and validation of novel HILIC and RP methods based on liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for determination of dicarboxylic acids and nitro-aromatic compounds in atmospheric aerosols, respectively.• Optimization of an ultrasound assisted solvent extraction method for extraction of dicarboxylic acids and nitro-aromatic compounds from quartz filters used for aerosol sampling.• Development and validation of specific HPLC/DAD methods for studying the heterogeneous ozonation of the pesticides trifluralin and isoproturon adsorbed on silica particles under atmospheric conditions (in collaboration with Dr. Maryline Pflieger, post-doctoral researcher).• Organization and execution of a bilateral research project with the Laboratory for Bioorganic Mass Spectrometry, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Antwerp, Belgium (group of Prof. Dr. Magda Claeys).• Synthesis of methyl-nitrocatechol isomers and elucidation of product structure using 1H and 13C NMR, and 2D correlation spectroscopy (collaboration with the Slovenian NMR Center, National Institute of Chemistry, Ljubljana, Slovenia (principal scientist Dr. Alen Čusak)).• Investigation and evaluation of aerosol sample matrix effects on analyte ionization under ESI-MS.• Planning and execution of kinetic experiments on the aqueous-phase reactivity of guaiacol (2-methoxy-phenol) in presence of hydroxyl and nitro radicals.• Development of RP-SPE, analytical- and semi-preparative HPLC/DAD methods for isolation, fractionation and purification of guaiacol reaction products formed through aqueous-phase guaiacol photonitration.
