I had the privilege of working with Dusan when I approached him to be the engineering lead on the Marshall Islands Electricity Roadmap in 2018. This project has been received internationally as a landmark piece of work demonstrating how island countries can plan towards zero emission, reliable and affordable electricity systems. It was successful in large part to Dusan’s world-leading expertise in island renewable energy systems, and also in his excellent communication skills in helping high level decision-makers understand the choices and trade-offs in energy systems design. Dusan is not only a thought leader in this area, but he is a pleasure to work with as an excellent team player and collaborator.

I had the pleasure of working with Dusan, while at Enernet Global, collaborating on a multitude of projects in Australia, the Philippines and the Caribbean. Dusan has been a key member of the management team, continuously adding value through his deep understanding of business processes, technical core knowledge and strategic vision. Dusan is excellent at addressing business needs and optimizing solutions by bringing his technical knowledge to bear.

In this role, I lead Entura microgrid and smart grid technical activities. I lead teams which develop strategic low carbon energy pathways for island nations. Contributed to Pacific Islands Energy Action Plans by diesel reduction and increasing energy security. Developed renewable energy ready grid systems through grid transformation, distribution network improvements, energy management and controls, and micro-grid optimisation. Contributed to development of social safeguards, environmental and gender action plans. Stakeholders management including government agencies, international banks and island communities. Developed capacity building plans and delivered trainings to technical staff. Worked on project planning, implementation, monitoring, scope and cost control, quality management, change management. Contributed to procurement plans development and evaluated bids. I presented my microgrid power systems experiences at international conferences, gave lectures involving remote power systems at Entura Clean Water and Energy Institute, and lectured Power System Design to graduate students at University of Tasmania. Key technology experience in Embedded generators, Solar PV, Battery energy storage Systems, Wind turbines, Diesel generators, Increasing Energy efficiency, Demand Management, Electric power engineering (MV switchgear and LV control, protection, monitoring systems). Key skills in: Technical leadership, Project management, Client Relationship Management, Stakeholder Communication, Technical Design (concept and detail stage), technical specifications (Performance and detailed specifications for generators and MV/LV systems), Procurement and Tender preparation (specifically for solar PV, Battery Energy Storage, diesel generation, MV switchgears and LV monitoring, control and protection systems), Implementation, and Training of the semi-skilled and skilled staff in proper operation and maintenance (asset management) procedures.

I designed and implemented secondary power system solutions to hydro power stations and isolated microgrids. I undertook and led development activities in isolated microgrids over a number of projects. I held a role of main technical support for two isolated microgrid systems. For these power systems, I provided ongoing technical support and fault finding during operations for over 4 years, which include power system optimisation for the purposes of increasing renewable energy penetration whilst preserving grid stability. Key technology experience: Hydro stations, protection and control systems, renewable technologies, Solar PV, Battery energy storage Systems, Wind turbines, Diesel generators, Electric power engineering (MV switchgear and LV control, protection, monitoring systems). Key skills: Technical Design (concept and detail stage), technical support in everyday power station operation, Implementation of technical solutions and designs (On-site installation and commissioning), HV testing, and training of the power station personnel in new procedures.

In this role, I was the lead power systems engineer on the King Island Renewable Energy Integration Project (KIREIP) which involved integration of solar PV, wind and / battery energy storage and diesel generation to achieve 100% renewable energy penetration system. My duties involved design, specifications, procurement and implementation of middle voltage switchgear and associated low-voltage systems, control network, control devices, protection relays and metering/monitoring devices for the entire island. Development of the project plan including the monitoring and management of changes as required for the successful implementation of the renewable energy systems, battery storage and MV / LV switchgear (KIREIP). Furthermore, led the Smart Grid project where I designed, specified, tested and implemented island-wide communication network for demand management / energy efficiency devices in-stalled at residential premises. Contributed to increasing energy efficiency through using off peak renewable energy for remote pump operation/residential energy use. Key technology experience in Solar PV, Battery energy storage Systems (largest off-grid battery system in the southern hemisphere), Wind turbines, Diesel generators, Demand management, Electric power engineering (MV switchgear and LV control, protection, monitoring systems), and MV distribution system. Key skills included technical leadership, stakeholder communication, technical design (concept and detail stage), technical specification (Performance and detailed specifications for generators and MV/LV systems), procurement and tender preparation (EOI and RFP stage for the Smart Grid project), and Implementation (On-site installation, testing and commissioning). Having achieved success of 100 % renewable energy integration on the KIREIP, I have taken these skills to the market as an expert on developing optimal integration solutions.
