I have worked as a Sales Advisor at Debenhams for the past 5 years. As a result of completing my degree I was promoted to the Visual Merchandising Department to assist in their Christmas displays and promotions. Christmas being one of the key periods for Debenhams to reinforce its core brand message, I was actively involved in consultations and meetings which focussed on the company’s predicted top sellers and how to best showcase these in store. Working in the Visual Merchandising Department I gained a great deal of creative experience and an understanding of how the interiors of stores can influence customer sales.

Every evening we would escort freshers to the different clubs across Nottingham, encouraging them to meet new people as well as be on hand to take them home if needed. Out of 30 students I was selected for a 4 month placement at Tommy Hilfiger Head Office in Amsterdam as a Visual Merchandising Intern, specifically for the emerging Middle East market. This was to be a challenging development for Tommy Hilfiger Visual Merchandising bearing in mind the cultural restrictions regarding what is permissible in terms of fashion imagery and promotion. I was heavily involved in the introduction of Tommy Hilfiger’s first Ramadan themed window display, in an attempt to align itself sympathetically with the region’s cultures. As a result I was responsible for producing Visual Merchandising Guidelines to which the region’s Visual Merchandisers would follow on how to construct their next window displays. I gained invaluable experience during my 4 months and increased my knowledge in all aspects of visual merchandising and the role it plays in the luxury retail market. My graphic design skills were also put to good use through the introduction of a department Newsletter which was sent out to the region on a monthly basis.
