Gareth was the Technical Director when I was a Volunteer Team Leader. with 40+ employed and volunteer technicians, his team was one of the most coordinated and positive teams within the organisation. The high standards of health and safety and technical responsibility is a lot to ask of volunteers and the training schedules, constant updating of procedures and policies, team, group and individual support which Gareth put into effect was superb. As a volunteer myself, and team leader for 4 seasons, I found Gareth to be extremely sensitive and understanding to the role volunteers played in the organisation. This was extremely apparent in the way he managed the rotas not only for training, but also for live shows and pre-show technical checks and rehearsals. His understanding of volunteer/work/life balance was vital and made for an extremely cohesive team dynamic. Many of the team members had no technical theatre experience and Gareth’s patience in teaching and supporting each individual showed that he is an excellent manager and mentor. Gareth’s development of training materials showed his depth of understanding of combining fully trained employed staff alongside those volunteering; differentiating his learning objectives to support the whole team, no matter their skill level. An all round great experience working with, and learning from Gareth and I would happily work alongside him again.
