I reported directly to Larissa when I worked as the Office Manager for Qualitas Oilfield Services in the Erbil, Iraq office. This was my first office job after being a teacher for several years, and Larissa was a great mentor. She gave me clear directions on what was needed and/or expected of me, in my position, and although she was thousands of miles away in another country, she was always easily reachable whenever I needed help. She always seemed to know just when I needed a firmer hand or for her to loosen the reigns a bit so I could work autonomously, but effectively. Larissa gave me room to find my own ways to do things, and over time, she also gave me the push I needed to start taking on more responsibilities. I would say that a great deal of why I've become a good leader and a good manager is due to working with Larissa. She showed me that a manager should be clear and firm, but also compassionate. She showed me that a manager should recognize their team members' abilities, and then help them to grow those skills and utilize them in new ways. I really enjoyed working with Larissa and still look to her for advice sometimes.
