Site Superintendent
-
Sep 1997 - Feb 1998
Upon joining a small numbered company doing business as Jakes Contracting (as it was then known), I was assigned to assist the site superintendent with the civil works (site survey, excavation, grade beams, backfill & compaction, rough grading, etc.) for a new aircraft hangar at CFB Comox. Here I got the nickname, Numbers; as survey and calculations came easy to me. Shortly after, I was overseeing the development of a new subdivision (site grading, excavation, utility installation, backfill & compaction, pressure testing, road construction, incl. curb & gutter and sidewalk) in north Parksville, BC. But, then winter and the rains came. Knowing that my career should not be dependent on weather and the seasons I secured a position with Infrastructure Systems Ltd. in Edmonton, AB Show less

QA/QC Manager
-
Jul 1993 - Sep 1994
I was approached by Franki Africa to develop the necessary procedures and documentation for a quality assurance program for the Alusaf Hillside Smelter project that they had recently been awarded. I joined Franki Africa in a contract position as I had already started my application for permanent residency in Canada. In developing the quality program for the Hillside Smelter I suggested that Franki Africa should apply for ISO 9002 certification as all this work was being done for a single large project and could be easily expanded to include the whole company. I worked at the Sandton head office for 3 months before being transferred to the Hillside Smelter project in Richards Bay, South Africa where I oversaw the QA/QC program on site and continued to work on the company wide ISO 9002 certification. I was to depart for Canada in May 1994 but was asked to stay in order to get the lion share of the Hillside Smelter project complete and to advance the company ISO 9002 certification as far as possible. I unfortunately had to depart in September 1994 otherwise my Canadian Permanent Residency application would expire, I had exactly one year from when the document was issued to set foot in Canada. When I left the Hillside Smelter project was nearing completion and I had trained my site replacement and an application had been made to the International Standards Organization (ISO) for the Franki Africa ISO 9002 certification. The ISO 9002 certification is now obsolete and has been replaced by ISO 9001. Show less

Project Engineer
-
Jan 1992 - Jun 1993
My first six months at Dorbyl Structural Engineering was as a construction engineer on the Venetia Diamond Mine in the Bushveld of far northern South Africa. Much of this work was the erection of large steel buildings, conveyors, pumps, process piping, and other large mechanical equipment. My next project was the planning and construction related to the removal and replacement large diameter off-gas piping of a steel smelter in Newcastle, South Africa. I worked at the Vanderbijl Park office for 8 months planning every stage of the project in great detail (first exposure to Work Structuring and Construction Work Packages). The requirement was to complete the work in only 6 months and there were heavy penalties for each day the smelter was not in operation after the deadline. This work included for the planning and design of placing a large Demag CC2000 heavy-lift crane on top of a 42 m high platform that traversed 50 m on steel tracks in order to reach and lift the large gooseneck (top was 107 m above the ground) and then move 50 m to place the load on the ground. I left DSE just prior to the project being completed, but the project was completed just 4 days ahead of schedule, working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Show less

Lieutenant / Civil Engineer

Jan 1991 - Dec 1991
This was done as part of my compulsory military service (conscription); as a combat engineer (otherwise known as a sapper). After completing officer's training (lieutenant) at the SADF School of Engineers in Kroonstad, I was posted to the SA Army Battle School at Lohatlha where other than combat training, I worked as a civil engineer with the 2nd Field Engineer Regiment; constructing a new 1,000' shooting range, building and maintaining roads, and other civil works on the base. "The main function of 2nd Field Engineer Regiment is to provide mobility to, and ensuring the survivability of the landward forces of the SANDF, and to deny the mobility of the enemy when needed. This is done through mine warfare, water purification, bridge building, demolitions, basic field engineering, obstacles, defensive works and watermanship." Show less

Building on from my experience at Optima Hydraulics I continued to work my June/July and December/January university vacations in the drafting office of Meridian Systems. I would spend about 25% of my time in the drafting office and the other 75% in the workshop or out in the field. This included leading crews to go and repair (remove and reinstall) hydraulics on fishing vessels in Hermanus and Saldanha Bay. Showing a keen interest going into engineering, I worked my June/July and December/January school vacations in the drafting office of Optima Hydraulics when they were still located in Stikland Industrial Park. These were the days of traditional drafting boards and hand drafted drawings. When things were slow in the drafting office I would often work in the workshop repairing hydraulic equipment.
