I synthesized peptides using various solid phase techniques at both large and small scale. I kept track of chemical inventory and monitored the automated synthesizers for mechanical failure. I also trained fellow employees and gave tours of the lab to local youth groups. I synthesized peptides using various solid phase techniques at both large and small scale. I analyzed lead via ICP-OES in order to determine the levels of certain trace metals, such as antimony, contained within it. The purpose of this project was to establish a link between hunting with lead ammunition and the ingestion of said ammunition (subsequently causing lead poisoning) by California Condors. I developed a method by which the bullets could be dissolved and prepared into samples suitable for analysis, and analyzed the data obtained from the samples. I provided assistance in the laboratory for a graduate student. My duties included building up stocks of N-methylated amino acids, synthesizing peptides to be screened for therapeutic activity, preparing samples for analysis by HPLC-MS, and loading resin with amino acids for use in solid phase synthesis. The Lokey research group is attempting to find viable drug candidates amongst cyclic peptides, a class of proteins that has produced drugs such as cyclosporin A.
