Alex is an awesome team member who would be an asset to any Data Science/AI organization. As one of my first hires at SurePrep he was forced to wear many hats from being a Data Scientist, to being a Cloud Engineer, to assisting in Dev-Ops and more. Alex quickly can take a client/customer need and help translate it into a quickly viable solution - and then iterate - which was perfect for helping our start up reach success in short order. Most importantly, Alex is a great personality that gets along well with many team members and helps others achieve their best. I strongly recommend him for any Machine Learning role, and I eagerly look forward to how he continues to succeed and build upon his impressive skillset going forward!

Alex Tryforos is the kind of data scientist I would hire again and again for any data team I was leading. Alex possesses a combination of skills that is hard to find and very invaluable to a data science team. First, Alex is an expert in traditional statistics. Maybe you think this sounds boring, but keep in mind that all machine learning from simple binary classifiers to complex LLMs, are built upon statistical concepts like probability, distributions, and model fitting. Statistics is indeed the theoretical framework upon which ML is built. Specifically, I recall Alex being called in by two other talented data scientists because they were stuck trying to estimate how much of a classification problem they had actually solved (I.e. how should they think about ROI in their ML projects). Despite having plenty of his own work to do, Alex was able to help these scientists utilize some distribution estimates and clever statistics to help them reach a solution. There are countless ways Alex’s strong background in statistics is useful on any DS team. All that being said, Alex is also a modern data scientists with experience in machine learning algorithms and machine learning operations. I found Alex to be thirsty for knowledge in this area and a fast learner. I know he is highly capable working with complex ML classifiers in scaled production usage as well as new toys like LLMs. Alex also demonstrated some excellent soft skills when partnering with product managers. Initially, I assigned Alex to one team to meet their product needs. It quickly became clear that communication, clear goals, and consistent direction were hard to come by on this team. Nevertheless, Alex persevered and continued to deliver incremental value whenever he could get the support he needed. This ability to work with challenging partners and find ways to deliver value is another reason Alex is so valuable. Finally, Alex also excelled at communication. In particular his written reports describing his modeling and analyses were top notch. They were clear but also thorough. Highly technical but also easy to read. It’s hard to find scientists with the ability to explain their approaches in a highly organized and approachable manner. Alex also is a great presenter and person to person communicator. I never found working with Alex challenging and I know his data science peers spoke highly of him. Alex is ready for the more senior roles on a data science team and is likely ready to lead other data scientists as well.
