Special Assistant to the GEF CEO
-
Mar 2019 - Present
I work directly with the CEO of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) housed within the World Bank Group. -> The Global Environment Facility (GEF) established on the eve of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, is the largest multilateral fund ($5.3 billion), dedicated to confronting biodiversity loss, climate change, pollution, and strains on land and ocean health. -> Over the past three decades, the GEF has provided more than $22 billion in grants and blended finance and mobilized $120 billion in co-financing for more than 5,000 national and regional projects. -> The GEF is a unique partnership that works in 185 countries connecting 18 agencies, multilateral development banks, national entities, civil society, Indigenous Peoples, and the private sector. -> The GEF is the financial mechanism for five major international environmental conventions: the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

I worked in the Trade in Services and Investment Division of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and specifically provided legal support and advice on the current ongoing negotiations to develop a multilateral agreement on 'Investment Facilitation for Development'. -> The Trade in Services and Investment Division provides support and technical advice to 164 WTO members on the implementation of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and on further negotiations mandated by the Agreement. The Division also provides support to ongoing initiatives such as on investment facilitation. -> In December 2021, 112 WTO members co-sponsored a Joint Statement on Investment Facilitation for Development. Launched in 2017 by a group of developing and least-developed WTO members, the Joint Initiative aims at developing a multilateral agreement on Investment Facilitation for Development that will improve the investment and business climate, and make it easier for investors in all sectors of the economy to invest, conduct their day-to-day business and expand their operations. Facilitating greater participation of developing and least-developed members in global investment flows also constitutes a core objective of the future Agreement. The initiative does not cover market access, investment protection, and investor-state dispute settlement.
