I had the pleasure of working with Derek. At a crucial time he stepped in to help @scopeinsight with the development of its Assessment and Data IT system, work with our supplier @stamkracht and optimise our internal way of working. The result is one to be proud of.

Joël Pattij

If you are looking for somebody enthusiastic who knows how to deal with off-shore development teams and different cultures, Derek is your man. Derek knows his strengths and weaknesses, he is eager to develop his skills and knowledge and has proven to apply these in his way of working. Besides all of this and most important: Derek is a great guy, a nice colleague and can be of great value to any team.

Usman Malik

Derek is a fantastic person to work with. I can recommend Derek as a person with great wisdom and deep experience of IT solutions. Experienced natural leader. Reliable, smart, independent and achievement oriented co-worker. Self motivated, his knowledge is vast and thorough. Is able to manage tasks of entire team.

At Fairfood we believe that working towards sustainable food chains starts with knowing where your food comes from. Fairfood offers tech solutions that enable food businesses to improve their responsible business practices. I'm responsible for the architecture and development of these tools, including a farm-to-fork blockchain-based traceability platform, a novel farmer payment verification and evidence collection field app, and consumer storytelling platform. Additional work has included implementing agile-based development practices and assisting the organization with being ready for scale on both technical and process levels. Show less

We started Field Reporter in 2016 with the idea of telling the story behind the data. Field Reporter is a visual reporting platform that allows organizations to capture and share their stories in a fast, authentic and coordinated way across different countries and time zones. As CTO I was responsible for supervising product design, development, testing, and technical implementation, and played a large role in customer acquisition and product vision. SCOPEinsight provides actionable insights needed to make better informed investment decisions regarding farmer organizations, as well as targeted interventions on a wide range of issues (productivity, sustainability, etc). As interim product owner, I helped SCOPEinsight focus their efforts in platform development, streamline their development and priority-setting processes, and develop innovations in business intelligence. At UTZ I was responsible for the analysis, design, integration, and technical implementation of business processes for UTZ Certified and its partners. I managed software suppliers and the daily operations of UTZ Certified ERP systems that are tailor-made to enable commodity industries and other certification platforms (such as the Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil) to show transparency and provide insight into the sustainability of their supply chains. I worked with stakeholders across the organization to examine their needs and develop new tools and platforms to satisfy them. I was deeply involved in project management, application design, technical specifications, and issue management in relation to UTZ's local and offshore suppliers. I supervised technical teams responsible for systems administration, quality control, business intelligence and support services. Additionally I advised the organization about technology trends and opportunities for their usage in the certification and sustainability sectors. Show less

At Fairfood I was brought on to supervise the IT operations for a national sustainability NGO in the midst of a major internationalization phase. My primary task was to bring structure to the IT services so that they could be easily maintained and serve the needs of a quickly growing organization. These tasks included creating and implementing all IT policies and processes; designing and implementing knowledge management and ERP systems to keep all departments in sync and allow them to scale up quickly; selecting and managing service providers, re-implementing the server infrastructure and supervising systems administration and IT support activities. Finally I made a big contribution to the international expansion of Fairfood by supplying logistical support (IT and other operational activities) to six newly opened offices in both developing and OECD countries in the short time I was there. At Nitinol Devices & Components (now Confluent) I was brought on to design and supervise the complete rollout of all-new IT infrastructure after NDC separated from Johnson & Johnson in early 2008. My main focus was to minimize downtime for the organization as they made the difficult move away from the internal services of a Fortune 500 company. I managed a diverse team of internal and external personnel, and coordinated large handoff of services and data over a period of several months with my counterparts inside J&J. I was responsible for all post-transition technology aspects of the company including the server infrastructure, telephone systems, backup processes, networking systems, security audits, compliance, and supervising general IT support for the company's 150+ employees. After the spinoff was successful and things were running smoothly I left the organization to pursue Master's degree at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Show less

At Standsure I assisted internet startups with design, implementation, and emergency troubleshooting of high-availability, public-facing production environments. I also supplied clients with network documentation and network monitoring services. Additionally I advised and supported Standsure's clients with the maintenance of a broad range of corporate server environments (both Windows & Linux), email services (locally hosted and cloud-based), and VPN solutions. While I attended the Universiteit van Amsterdam as an exchange student I worked part time to assist AHF's Global Secretariat Headquarters with communication and day-to-day IT needs. I also performed a structural review of their global internet and telephony services providers and infrastructure, and was able to significantly reduce their total communication costs. At Unitek I provided consulting services to many clients (both structurally and on-call), and was primarily concerned with the expansion of their internal server infrastructure and improving the management of IT systems and procedures. I acted as senior-level systems administrator for mission-critical web and information servers both at client sites and within Unitek (Linux/Unix/Windows server environments). I also managed the expansion of Unitek's IT systems to include additional branch offices and remote users. Show less
