I had the pleasure to work with Carlos during the period January 2013 to January 2015. During this period Carlos reported to me at WWF International in my position as Director of Policy and Science, and later as Acting Executive Director for Conservation. Carlos was the best team manager in our entire team. He had this magic combination that is so rare in people in leadership positions: comprehensive and authoritative knowledge of his subject area; ability to communicate extremely well about his work to a wide range of audiences, in a number of languages; and at the same time being a top manager in terms of organizing his team for effective and timely delivery. This magic combination came through in all the formal (e.g., 360 degree) as well as informal reviews of his work – coming from his professional peers in the network; his colleagues at WWF; and of course his own staff. In addition to his top professional performance, Carlos is simply a fantastic person to work, and to be with. I have thoroughly enjoyed our professional relationship, and if the situation were to arise again, I would be most privileged to work with him again. Thank you Carlos! It has been a privilege to work with Carlos over the last 5 years, as a member of his conservation team. His leadership style evokes genuine commitment to the collective cause-in our case, trying to preserve some of the last strongholds of emblematic and endangered fauna in Africa, Asia and elsewhere. With an innate ability to motivate and lead an extremely diverse team—necessary in order to confront the most formidable conservation challenges—his strategic guidance and commitment to the task ensured that our team was able to deliver. Moreover, his thoughtful effort to make sure that every contributing team member shared equally in the team’s success was both refreshing and motivating. Also a tremendously gifted speaker, Carlos is able to motivate and engage both small and large audiences to commit to action, whether in the boardroom, the class room or on camera. It has been both an inspiration as well as a super learning experience being a member of his team and I have no doubt he has only just begun to make his mark in the vast conservation community.
