Lihir (capital, Londolovit), in Papua New Guinea's Bismarck Archipelago, is a volcanic Island approximately the size of Barbados, with 20,000 residents and a very productive gold mine managed by Australia's Newcrest Mining Ltd. As part of their work, the mining companies built a hospital with 22 beds and an operating room, which supports approximately eight peripheral clinics on Lihir Island and some of its neighbors. In addition to the usual industrial matters, Lihir's health system deals with malaria, filariasis, yaws and other tropical diseases, maternal and perinatal emergencies, hernias and other medical problems of developing countries. While developing Lihir's mineral wealth in partnership with the island's people, Newcrest has proved to be a model of sustainable economic development, cultural sensitivity and respect for the environment.
