Initially working for Indaero who manufacture Airbus A400M protective covers for intake and exhaust vents when parked, proof reading the commercial handbook. Next door, Unilaser requested an upgrade for their laser cutting machine (1500x1000mm, €90,000) to increase the working area available (3000x1500mm, €50,000) and incorporate a loading area with 2 trays increasing productivity. During the process a more effective decision to rethink the upgrade and build a completely new laser cutting machine. The large increase of work output and cost savings in comparison to the old system was doubled. Working with a team of testers and designers for a medical device which is a gel dispenser required to meet specifications such as dose excreted (grams), drop tests, pressure tests to name a few then repeat these with conditions samples. Responsible for conducting these tests under strict management to ensure methodology and procedure are thoroughly enforced. Data collection and analysis are daily tasks. A high level of patience and detail is needed as hundreds of samples are tested at each time point, of which there are 4. Materials Placement Student, Materials Development Lab Reporting to Howard Turner (Principal Development Materials Engineer), conducting tests and concluding the results in a presentable format (PowerPoint) for fatigue, compression, tension and wear products. Given fatigue samples with different surface finishes and heat treatments to be loaded onto a rotational fatigue rig as to see the cause of failure over time. These failure surfaces were examined under the SEM to pinpoint initiation point to find the most efficient set of samples. Responsible for: • Conducting fatigue tests from start to finish; pre-measurement of samples, testing, cutting, mounting, polishing and grinding, presentation of results • Writing procedure and reports of the various jobs given • Utilising equipment such as the SEM, Zygo and the Alicona Having to organise and prepare many samples for different projects while keeping track of each individual sample’s results at one time, learning to document each step with job codes and dates to ensure results are not mixed or lost and to pass auditing standards.
