Faced with an unanticipated schedule gap in the New England bicycle racing calendar, I co-promoted and served as Race Director for a USA Cycling-sanctioned Cyclocross race on less than 6 weeks lead time. In that period, I learned the necessary skills for permitting, finances, course design, logistics, food service, and promotion. This resulted in a highly successful event with over 400 participants, and exceptionally strong positive post-race feedback. Without external financing or sponsorship, the Gateway Hills CX race turned a modest profit, secured engagement from stakeholders for next year, and established a very strong brand for #GWHCX as a well-run, fun, and successful race.
