During the course of the month-long internship, I learnt and experienced more than one could ever imagine, not only in the field of sales and management, but in terms of social aspects as well. I feel extremely honoured that I got to experience the day-to-day actions and happenings within an office environment. Furthermore, I had the chance to get a taste of the cultural norms in Dongguan and China. Dissecting the information absorbed in those weeks, the most valuable lesson learnt is the complexity of the paper making production process, and the structured step-by-step procedure from receiving orders to delivery and returns. In addition, watching and observing the way in which our sales supervisor communicate, negotiate and exchange information with their clients was a real eye opener. In the case of difficult clients, the positivity and patience conveyed from the supervisor was admirable indeed, especially when dealing with backlash from clients with regards to the discontinuation of several PMs, unable to meet the customers’ purchasing demands. Maintaining customer relationships is predominant to a successful enterprise, however a more imperative moral taken from this experience is learning the importance of keeping up to date on the know-how of competitors and the ever-changing market. I have learnt to understand that competitors are not always seen as a negative influence for the business, but rather a potential short-term solution for clients.

As part of the inter-school competition, teams of 20 students participate across Hong Kong in running a business simulation. I held the position of Director of Finance for Island School. As head of Finance, I was in charge of recording costs and expenditures, creating break-even charts and data analysis for the final report and presentation, but also the creation of our stall for the Junior Achievement fair, where our jewellery products were being marketed.
