In my over 25 years in technology, I have worked with a large number of CTOs, and Nate certainly stands out as one of the best. He is highly capable, incredibly curious, very self-aware, and a marvelous colleague. While I have not worked directly for Nate, I know many who have, and they all describe him as a great manager. I have witnessed him as a leader, working with his team and across teams, and have always been impressed with his leadership approach. He is very good at forging consensus and making sure that all voices are heard, but he is also quite willing to make the unpopular choice if that it what is required and is best for the organization. Nate and I worked together on a number of highly-politicized and volatile matters, including negotiating a bet-the-company consent decree with the attorneys general of two large states. Nate never lost his cool, and navigated the complex and turbulent waters with aplomb and intelligence. I saw the same level of adroitness when Nate would be in discussions, often very high-stakes ones, with state leaders, explaining our position on a complicated technology challenge; he was always able to make lay people understand the difficult concepts without condescending, and while always keeping the business objective as the primary focus of the discussion. Nate was always very good at the mundane and necessary parts of the CTO job, keeping the servers serving and the products working. But where he really excelled was when it came to presenting and driving a technology vision for the company. Nate was always looking at the company, and its place in the industry and the wider technology and business context, and thinking about how to make sure that we were properly positioned for what was coming next. Being able to do the blocking and tackling, while also drawing up the game-plan for next season's opponent, is what sets Nate apart.

I had the opportunity to work with Nate at Questar Assessment, Inc and recommend him high as both a person and professional. Nate brings passion, commitment and a sense of pride to every endeavor regardless of how big or small. Working with Nate was a constant lesson in selflessness and dedication to the organization as well as those who worked for him. Nate's ability to architect and design complex technical solutions make him an asset to any organization.
