I spent 4 weeks at the GSK site located in Mount Lavinia, Colombo, where I was able to observe operations throughout the whole plant. The products manufactured and raw materials used throughout the plant were tested within the Quality Assurance department, they were put through vigorous experiments to insure that they met the standards set. I was able to observe experiments conducted on Panadol (Paracetamol) tablets, Calpol, ENO and many other major pharmaceutical products. These experiments included the analytical testing using gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography. The manufacturing at the GSK Mount Lavinia site is split into solid, liquid and balm manufacturing. The solid manufacturing was solely the compression of Panadol tablets, from Panadol powder imported from India. The liquid manufacturing produced a more variety of products; I was able to witness the production of Ostiocalcium, Cytacon, Panadol and Vitamin D syrup. Within the balm manufacturing section I was able to observe production of Headfast and Iodex. This experience helped me understand the importance of precision required during manufacturing. It has also reinforced the importance of safety within the site.
