𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 for the plant breeding and seed sector because we need to be able to meet the challenging and ever-evolving needs of farmers and other actors of the agri-food system, as well as consumer preferences and policy objectives through the development of new plant varieties. “Research in the plant breeding and seed sector has the potential to contribute to multiple objectives across environmental, agricultural, consumer safety, and public health policy.” 𝐈𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐮𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝟓 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲! So plant breeders have to anticipate future demands and challenges, and predict which plant varieties and traits will be important in the next decade and beyond. Already today 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐔-𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 that address current and future challenges regarding plant breeding, food and nutrition security, and sustainable agricultural practices. At Euroseeds, we facilitate the involvement of the seed and plant breeding sector in relevant EU research and coordination programmes.

I co-lecture the course Biotechnology and Society, which is part of the curriculum of the Master in Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Ghent University. The goal of this course is to offer students a broader overview of the applications of modern biotechnology and biochemistry in various fields such as food industry, medicine, environmental conservation and agriculture. Moreover, the specificity of biotech research in a company setting versus an academic setting will be explained, and emphasis is put on the public perception of biotechnology and the ethical & safety questions raised in society.
