I have known Steve Link since 2000. We have worked together most of the years since - in three different companies and two different industries. Often he has been a key member of my management teams. When I met Steve he was working in operations at Fleet Financial. I had just joined the company as a Site Executive via a merger. I inherited a group of approximately 500 people and had to undertake the task of merging them with another group of 500 from my former company to create an effective - but much smaller - team that would take the business forward. Steve – a first-line supervisor at the time – quickly distinguished himself via his work ethic, desire and capacity to learn, the ability to apply technology to problems and creative problem-solving. He soon advanced to become our Quality Control Manager. He led many cross-functional efforts internally and also interacted extensively with our largest commercial clients. Later when Bank of America acquired Fleet, Steve was trained in Six Sigma methodology and added those skills to his portfolio. Less than a year after I left the bank, I recruited Steve to athenahealth which was a private, $40 million, private, healthcare IT company. Steve proved himself both as a terrific leader of his own teams (he vastly improved the department he managed at its Massachusetts headquarters, then later built a team in Maine from scratch) but also as a builder and visionary for bringing automation and scale to athenahealth’s remittance processing/lockbox environment. The company processed zero client checks when Steve started but was handling millions by the time he left. athenahealth was a public, $500 million company by then. I recruited Steve yet again to move to Florida to work for CareCloud (also healthcare IT). There he has continued his pattern of building high-performing teams, using analytics to identify improvement opportunities and mastering every new service area that he encounters. He also has added nearly daily contact with key clients to his set of experiences. Steve is a continuous learner, a devoted team player and a leader within his group and cross-functionally. He fosters those qualities in the teams he manages. He focuses on accomplishments and giving credit rather than seeking the limelight. I’ve seen him perform successfully under very difficult circumstances. As I’m sure you can tell, if you have a challenging position that is important to your company’s success, I would wholeheartedly recommend Steve. Ralph Catalano ralphjcatalano@gmail.com
