Surf Radio is a student led online radio station broadcasting to the combined campuses of Falmouth and Exeter Universities in Penryn, Falmouth and Truro.Taking on the role of Station Manager I had inherited station in a precarious position. Pressures were mounting on the financial side and we had struggled to establish ourselves as much as we'd hoped the previous year. I have taken initiative and started several projects to help turn the tide including:- Negotiating with campus services to get Surf Radio playing in communal spaces across campus.- Leading a rebranding and collaborating with a graphic designer to create a new visual identity for the station.- Re-writing, or in some cases creating, policy documentation.- Built a sponsorship and advertising system and reached out to interested parties.- Creating remote working procedures to keep the station running during the Covid-19 lockdown.- Securing the station its own studio space on campus and new equipment. The results of this work are starting to show themselves with listenership in our first month back after the summer break has continued to increase at a rapid rate and engagement on social media has never been higher! In June 2021 Surf Radio was awarded the "Society of the Year" award at the annual Student's Union Awards and has gone on to take Gold for "Most Improved Station" at the SRA's Amplify Awards in July 2021.
