I started out as the Management Accountant for Newcastle based RTM Group Services from 1998 to 2005 when the owners were looking for an exit due to retirement. I took the opportunity to acquire the business from the owners and completed the deal in 2005 with 50+ strong workforce and an business.In 2007 we acquired a South East based traffic lights business known as Amber Langis (SIGNAL spelt backwards!). The existing owners were again retiring and looking for investors who can maintain the status quo. For me this strategic acquisition allowed both businesses to become a top player in the traffic management sector with significant synergy gains providing scale and reach.With annual revenues in excess of £12m and more than 150 operatives in 15 depots nationally and a vehicle fleet of 100, the inevitable happened in 2008 when the economy crashed and left us in the hands of a major bank that had its own issues and couldn't cope with our rapid growth. Nearly called it a day in 2008 but that would have meant giving up on my principles! So I scaled the operations back down to a more manageable size and we continue trading to this day... Lesson learnt: Revenue is Vanity and Profit is Sanity!After restructuring the business, I now help solve issues, create value, maximise growth and improve the business performance using my business skills to provide objective advice, expertise and specialist management skills. I am primarily concerned with the strategy, structure, management and finances of the business. I identify options for the business and suggest recommendations for change, as well as helping with additional resources to implement solutions.I operate across a wide variety of functional departments such as business strategy, marketing, financial and management controls.
