Yakult is one of the world's leading manufacturers of fermented dairy products with scientific background, manufacturing and distributing them in over 40 countries. The company is headquartered in Japan. Yakult Original has been distributed in Austria since 2005. In 2013, Yakult Plus was introduced to the market. Both products are characterized by the 20 billion active Shirota lactic acid bacteria that reach the gut live and increase the good bacteria there. Yakult was founded in 1935 by scientist Dr. Shirota, who discovered the unique and particularly resistant L. casei Shirota bacteria. Today, the vision of Yakult's founder is still firmly anchored in our corporate philosophy: Yakult contributes to the health and well-being of people around the world. Therefore, Yakult has been involved in numerous social projects that promote well-being in society for years. Yakult Austria cooperates with the Austrian Red Cross, supports sports clubs and drives research in the field of gut health. A central aim of Yakult, is to make scientifically based topics related to gut health accessible in an easily understandable way. Yakult operates two research institutes, the Yakult Central Institute in Tokyo and another in Ghent, Belgium. To date, the strain L. casei Shirota contained in Yakult and the intestinal microbiota are being researched there.
