Overview

In 2018, women directed only 19.25% of all films in Europe. Research in French-speaking Belgium underlines that only 25% of Belgian films in 2017 were directed by a woman. Clear figures on the entire Belgian film industry are lacking. Women are systematically underrepresented in important positions in the media, television and film industry. A gender balance in all sectors is essential. With more women representing key positions, better conditions are created for women in the industry. This contributes to more diversity and different perspectives, which are then converted to different media and hence reach a wider audience. Because the inequalities between men and women are so significant, sensibilisation is unlikely to be enough to bring about substantial change. We therefore propose proactive solutions in order to achieve a broad and lasting improvement.
