Wilmington Academy of Arts and Sciences is a private school in Wilmington, North Carolina that focuses on education for academically gifted students in grades 4-8. Some students need a little—or a lot—more than what other schools can provide. With that in mind, a group of teachers and parents came together to offer Wilmington another middle school option. They founded the Wilmington Academy of Arts and Sciences (WAAS) in 1997, becoming the only school in the area that caters exclusively to academically gifted students. WAAS offers a holistic approach to education. Core subjects such as biology, chemistry, math, history and language arts come alive in our interactive classrooms. Spanish immersion and comprehensive art and music classes are also a signature part of our daily curriculum. Serving the community is an integral part of character development, and we encourage our students to not only treat each other with kindness, but to also serve their community through multiple volunteer opportunities. The WAAS faculty strives to maximize each student’s potential for learning through the curriculum and their methods of instruction. Each member of the WAAS faculty holds high expectations for the academic success and achievement of all students. WAAS students are active participants in the learning process and a strong emphasis is placed on internal motivation and self-discipline. The involvement and commitment of parents is integral to the success of this independent school. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in the education of their students by monitoring their learning progress as well as volunteering for school activities.
