What do families and their children really need in outdoor education? Over the span of ten years, the Vancouver Outdoor Society (VOS) has strived to answer this question through dialogue with families before, during, and after our programs. We found that participants want more than a fun activity but a meaningful experience that creates personal growth; parents look for a reliable educational partner that can assist them to guide their children from childhood to adult years and nurture positive relationships with their children. To respond to the desires of families and participants, we've designed a wide variety of outdoor activities that incorporate VOS big 5 character traits - Honesty, Leadership, Trust, Courage, Patience - into the programs we offer. We aim to help participants discover and develop a sense of “self” through challenges and outdoor adventures. We also work closely with parents to harness the power of program experience to influence the lives of their children. The VOS outdoor adventure, cultural exploration, and educational philosophy offers youth a chance to learn beyond just how to have fun in the outdoors and the skills to live and travel in the wilderness; we aim to build character for the youth and foster resilient leaders for the future.
