Overview

University of Tehran, the icon of higher education in Iran, was established in its traditional form seven centuries ago. It was initially founded as a Houza (traditional religious school). In the modern era, the University evolved from its religious structure to a more modern and academic structure of higher education. Dar-ol-Fonoon College was the first engineering school in its modern form which was established about a century ago. University of Tehran in its current form was inaugurated in the winter of 1934. University of Tehran offers 976 programs in over 500 fields at 39 faculties and 120 departments at its campuses located in Tehran, Qom, Karaj, Kish and Jolfa with over 2000 tenured faculty members. Fifteen percent of the country’s Centers of Excellence, as recognized by the Iranian Ministry of Science Research & Technology, are located at University of Tehran, UT’s commitment to research is carried out in more than 40 research centers, over 3,500 laboratories, and its leading press that also publishes over 50 scientific peer-reviewed journals.
