Overview

Umundu Lx is a grassroots initiative interested in contributing to the transformation of society, changing to a more sustainable, resilient, and regenerative paradigm that allows us to live within the biophysical limits of the planet in a fair way. Our mission is to encourage society to reflect on potential solutions, so that everyone can be agents of change. Our main project is the Umundu Festival, a collective festival for sustainable transformation. The Festival invites its participants to think about how one can live and survive within the limits of a finite planet without destroying the ecosystems that support life on Earth. It creates spaces to foster debate and critical thinking regarding the problems arising from our current lifestyle and the system that feeds it. Umundu Festival encourages participants to be agents of change and to live proactively both at a personal level and in their area of influence, that is, in their family environment, group of friends, professional context, or at the level of their political intervention. This Festival lives from the participation of citizen initiatives, associations, social movements, and individuals. It thus represents a platform for sharing, communication, articulation, and mobilization of all for all. The word Umundu was constructed from the translation into Portuguese of the expression "one world", which conveys the idea of humanity being a single large global community. In Kinyarwanda, a language spoken in several countries in Africa, Umundu (a variation of the word Umuntu) means person or man. In Kikuyu, a language spoken in Kenya, Umundu is a variant of the word Ubuntu which means something like "humanity to others" and expresses the awareness of the relationship between the human being and the community. The idea of the individual and his relationship to the whole, humanity and the planet, in all its ecological, social, and spiritual aspects is in Umundu.
