Ubumwe Sports Initiative ("USI") uses sport as a means to enhance unity among Rwandan youth while simultaneously supporting Rwandan basketball development through a series of youth activities, coaches trainings, and infrastructure rehabilitation. Since 2010, Ubumwe has trained over 6,000 youth between the ages of 8-16 years old and equipped over 250 coaches with the skills necessary to implement basketball programming in their own communities and serve as mentors to local youth players. Ubumwe is a local initiative based in Kigali with programming in Kigali, Huye, Rubavu, Musanze, Rusizi, Nyagatare, & Guicumbi. From 2018-2020, USI partnered with PeacePlayers (PeacePlayers.org) to launch the Play Together, Live Together program in seven locations thanks to a Comic Relief grant. After a successful implementation, Ubumwe became a part of the PeacePlayers family and a member of their global network in 2021.
