Overview

Some call Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu a martial art, some call it a sport, but to our TBJJ team or family, as we feel like to be, it is a way of life, as Bushido means “The WAY/LIFE OF THE WARRIOR”. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed by the Gracie family in Brazil. Upon learning Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, Carlos Gracie modified techniques from these systems to allow a small individual, which was in his own case, to dominate a larger, stronger opponent. Because Jiu-Jitsu’s close combat attacks are capable of negating advantages of stand-up fighting, like arm reach and strength, Jiu-Jitsu is a viable self-defense system for all body types and strength ranges. Through Jiu-Jitsu’s diverse sets of arm locks, leg locks, and chokes, athletes are able to submit or subdue opponents without blunt force. BJJ also uses the lapels and the sleeves of the GI (Uniform worn at practice) to simulate chokes and grips offered by an opponent’s clothing. While TBJJ’s classes are mainly GI (Classic Traditional), we conduct NO-GI classes on Tuesday nights. Because the NO-GI style doesn’t allow the use of grips on clothing, athletes find themselves in faster paced, more intense matches, where the moves are loosen and the training ends up a great work out in every class, guided by Professor Demetrius
