Overview

Alarmed by the poor literacy and numeracy levels of children in foster care and how they have the lowest educational outcomes nationally, Bronwyn Sheehan founded The Pyjama Foundation in 2004 to make a positive impact on the lives of our communities most vulnerable children. Currently there are more than 51,000 children in foster care and statistics show that 75% of these children will not complete schooling. This equates to 30,000 children in care without proper education, limiting their chances to a brighter life. The Pyjama Foundation aims to break this cycle of disadvantage through their Love Of Learning Program, a program which screens, trains, and recruits every day volunteers to become "Pyjama Angels" - the Pyjama Angels matched with a child in care and spend time with them once a week, every week, focusing on learning-based activities. The Pyjama Angels read books aloud with a foster child, play educational games and with the child's homework. The Pyjama Foundation's goal is to empower children in foster care through learning, to improve their educational outcomes, improve their life skills and confidence.
