Overview

Tessares, a spin-off of Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Belgium, was founded in March 2015. It is a technology company that is active in the research, development, go-to-market and deployment of software solutions that significantly improve the performance and the quality of Internet access without requiring the deployment of resource-hungry infrastructure. It was founded by Prof. Olivier Bonaventure, Head of the laboratory in which the research was conducted, Sébastien Barré and Gregory Detal two senior researchers who contributed most to the development of the prototype, Denis Périquet who brings a wealth of industry experience from the Telecom world and SOPARTEC, the UCL technology transfer company. The researchers have over a period of many years greatly contributed to the design, implementation and standardisation of a new Internet protocol: Multipath TCP (MPTCP) which is an evolution of TCP, invented 40 years ago and used for over 90% of the world’s Internet traffic. Tessares provides an advanced fixed / mobile access solution, the Hybrid Access Solution that uses standardized Multipath TCP technology. This solution creates a 'single larger pipe' to cost-effectively deliver more internet speed across a wider geographic area. This software-only solution runs on various DSL or 4G/LTE CPE vendors' hardware. Tessares also has a solution for offloading mobile traffic to Wi-Fi. Mobile devices have Wi-Fi and Mobile network interfaces but usually only use one at a time. Tessares makes it possible to use both at the same time to keep customers connected while offloading as much of the traffic as possible to Wi-Fi.
