Overview

Sustainable Urban Mobility Network (SUM Net) India is a democratic, secular and membership-based coalition of individuals, voluntary organizations, and civil society networks and movements. It seeks to improve the quality of life for all by securing participatory processes of decision-making to ensure that urban mobility systems are universally accessible, socially just, economically viable and environmentally sound. Our aim is to: 1. Deeply democratise the processes of policy formulation and project level decision-making related to urban transportation at all federal governance levels. 2. Assist and support local communities to shape their urban transportation policies and systems. 3. Undertake public awareness initiatives and facilitate dialogue on transportation policies and projects. 4. Encourage cities to improve walking, cycling and public transportation facilities. The network is made up of such diverse individuals and organizations who see urban mobility as a part of the larger sustainable agenda. While all members agree with the larger sustainability vision, each member brings with them a unique local perspective which is what SUM Net seeks as a network— a true local, grassroots character where action and policy travel bottom up and not the other way round. That such a diverse group may exist and bring their understanding to the subject of urban transport is powerful. SUM Net’s presence is in different cities of India, which has expanded over the years. From a presence in around 5 cities at the beginning of the network in 2010, our presence is now in close to 20 cities.
