Steamship Historical Society of America

Non-profit Organizations

Overview

The Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA), founded in 1935, is dedicated to documenting, preserving and sharing the history of engine-powered vessels and our maritime heritage. Learn more about becoming a member and joining our community of shipsters at www.sshsa.org. Check out our educational site, STEAMing Into The Future, at www.shiphistory.org. Based at the Ship History Center in Rhode Island, SSHSA has opened their library and archive of photographs, ephemera, artifacts, models, and maritime art to the public through research, tours, lectures, and more. Our quarterly magazine PowerShips connects our members as well as enthusiasts worldwide with bright pages of feature articles and news of the shipping world. In 2008 with the help of a grant, the SSHSA digitized a portion of the image collections and provide access to some 40,000 historic ship images available at https://sshsa.pastperfectonline.com/. SSHSA received multiple grants to begin its education program and create an online repository for its collections. Teachers, students, and the general public can view primary and secondary sources, as well as lessons, articles, and technology integration tools for STEAM and Social Studies subjects. Check it out STEAMing Into The Future at www.shiphistory.org.
