Overview
Soweto TV started broadcasting in 2007. Since that first memorable day of broadcast, the station has gone from strength to strength as more people tuned in. From 200 000 viewers in 2008, Soweto TV has grown to be viewed by more than 2.65 million people across the country on a weekly basis. As a community station, Soweto TV has had to overcome many obstacles along the road. Today it is a strong and proud station, broadcasting and talking about the issues that matter most to the people in our community. The station has a strong developmental focus, providing skills and training in all aspects of broadcasting. We are proud to provide a voice for the voiceless and to promote democracy and community spirit in Soweto and beyond. The SowetoTV free-to-air footprint increased in 2011. Originally localised to the Soweto area, the station is now seen as far afield as Centurion, Vereeniging, Heidelberg and Vanderbijlpark as a result of a more powerful, 360 degree omni-direction antenna. SowetoTV is also available on DStv. Although SowetoTv is now available to people outside Soweto, the station has stayed true to its roots and is still broadcasting from the old Thloreng School building in historic Vilakaze Street, Soweto. As always it is run and managed by people from the community, for the community.
