South East London Community Energy-SELCE co-op

Renewables & Environment

Overview

South East London Community Energy is an award winning not-for-profit co-operative that specialises many aspects of renewables, efficiency, advice, generation and retrofit, including solar energy and LEDs on community buildings in the SE of the capital. Funds are raised through 'community share offers' - a bit like crowd funding. Anyone can buy shares in our projects and, in return, we pay investors 4% annual interest. Any surplus from our solar projects is channelled into our associated work to reduce fuel poverty in SE London. SELCE raised £250,000 to install solar arrays on four primary schools in 2015. On July 1st, the co-op launched its second share offer and now hopes to raise a further £140,000 to install solar arrays on five community buildings in Greenwich, Lewisham and Southwark. So far, we have put in more than 7,000 volunteer hours to turn our vision into a reality. Our aim is to generate locally produced renewable energy that is owned and governed by the people who use it. We also run successful fuel poverty projects in the community and deliver bespoke training. More information about this can be found on our website. We are two years old as an organisation, with an experienced board of voluntary directors. We are registered as an Industrial and Provident Society for the Benefit of the Community. There are many other successful organisations like ours around the country; we are collectively known as ‘energy co-ops’.
