Overview

smarvote.ca is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization that brings together government, technology innovators, civil society and the public to implement accessible, secure and reliable online voting in Canadian municipal, provincial and federal government elections. What would democracy look like if everyone could vote from their smartphone securely and in seconds? Why isn't there yet a "voting app"? Should there be? What are the risks, what are the benefits, and how can it be achieved? Specifically, the organization: -conducts research on online voting, drawing on the experiences and lessons learned from relevant jurisdictions around the world; -determines innovative, accessible technical solutions to online voting, grounded in respect for personal privacy and security protection; and -develops practical tools, including public education strategies, to support online voting. smartvote.ca would allow eligible Canadians to cast their vote online, through a computer, smartphone or mobile device, entirely at their convenience within the allocated election timeframe. Our mission: 1. To facilitate the right to vote of all eligible Canadians enshrined in the Constitution; 2. To increase the percentage of voting among eligible Canadians; and 3. To make Canada the global leader in iVoting by developing and sharing the most comprehensive and advanced resources on the subject and by supporting similar efforts in other countries. Our research looks into a wide range of emerging technologies that may have applications for online voting. Our current focus is on potential applications of blockchain-related technologies which may help to address security and privacy concerns within a robust and scalable voting platform.
