Sigmund Freud Museum

Overview

This is where Freud lived and worked for 47 years before he had to flee from the Nazis in 1938. This place is known worldwide as the origin of psychoanalysis – it was here that Freud revolutionized the human self-image. Extensively renovated and expanded in 2020, the museum, founded in 1971, displays all of the family's private rooms as well as Sigmund and Anna Freud's practices. Permanent exhibitions shed light on the development of psychoanalysis, the Freud family life and the history of the house. A conceptual art collection and special exhibitions confront Freud's thinking with contemporary positions and questions. With Europe's largest library on psychoanalysis, the Sigmund Freud Museum has a globally connected research platform that facilitates a lively exchange with universities, scientists, and interested specialist audiences within the framework of projects, events and the use of the library and archive. With over 100,000 visitors from all over the world, the museum is one of the most important tourism and economic factors in Vienna, especially in the area of Vienna‘s 9th district near the city center. The modern equipped event rooms and special guided tours are appreciated by partners from different branches as a unique setting for their events.
