Overview

SeedScience is a non-profit association. We believe that education is key for the growth of a country and that science education plays a crucial role in developing creativity, communication, and critical thinking skills in young students. We partner with African NGOs in Ghana, Uganda, and Tanzania to train local science teachers. We work with them to develop a teaching method that can positively engage 10-18 years old students through hands-on science experiments and connect what happens in school with daily life. The first training lasts about 3 months for each community. After this period, teachers possess a different point of view on teaching and gain new skills to teach science practically by using cheap and locally available materials. They make their lessons more effective and fun, work together to start small projects and organize workshops to train other teachers and keep seeding science. In a few years, we create a network of high-level science teachers that are able to lead the project with the collaboration of local NGOs and authorities. The development of these local educators and the very low cost of materials for experiments make the project highly sustainable. The SeedScience project is under the patronage of UNESCO - through the Interdisciplinary Chair in Bioethics and Biotechnology - and of the Department of Chemical Science and Technology of the University of Rome Tor Vergata. The project was funded by the National Geographic Society, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the University of Rome Tor Vergata, the Waldensian Church and private donors.
