The Royal Papua Yacht Club has come a long way since the birth of what was then known as the Port Moresby Aquatic Club in 1921, to the formation of the Papua Yacht Club in 1957, finally the granting of royal charter in 1977. The beginning of dramatic growth for a yacht club started with a meeting of sailing enthusiasts in the first commodore’s (Mr Arthur Travers) lounge room in Port Moresby in June 1921. The then Aquatic Club soon built a ‘boat shed’ type clubhouse with a viewing platform on the roof situated approx. half way between the old clubhouse and the fire station, in the seaward side over the water. The Aquatic Club catered for swimmers and water polo as well as sailing. Today we have approximately 3000 members, membership being family, single, country and cadet. We have an Executive Committee lead by our Commodore, Mr. Kilroy Genia. We have the following clubs: - Port Moresby Game Fishing Club, Sailing Division, Hobies Club, POMSAC, Konedobu Kanu Klab, Junior Sailing and Pee Wee Sailing. All sub-clubs have their particular activities throughout the year. In the Clubhouse, we have the Mac Dhui Restaurant, Main Bar, Wet Bar, Sails Café, Pokies, RPYC Gym, Administration Department, Marina Department, Boat Shed and most recently, we opened the Boat Yard – a wet and dry children’s play park. The Club has a very strong management team in place with Aaron Batts at the helm as General Manager. The Administration Department consists of Reception, Accounts Division, Banking staff and Drivers, under the management of Ella Kasu, Administration Manager and Finance is managed by, Eva De Leon. The RPYC is active within the industry and is a member of the Marina Industry Association (MIA) of Australia and Global Marina Industry (GMI). The Marina just received “Gold Anchor” recognition from the MIA.
