Overview

The Reef Defenders (RD) set out formulate a scientific method that would tackle blast fishing and other destructive fishing practices. It soon became clear that the root of this problem lies in the existing socio-economic conditions of indigenous coastal fishing communities. RD is now working to design alternative livelihood programs in cooperation with various concerned stakeholder including NGO’s, Communities, Governmental Authorities and the Private sector. This ensures that any solution employed keeps the best interests of these stakeholders in mind while trying to eradicate destructive fishing practices which threaten valuable biodiversity and marine habitats; which have ramifications on the economic and social well-being for people and countries in South-East Asia.
