READ to RISE

Overview

A non-profit organisation that promotes youth literacy in under-resourced communities in South Africa. We hope to inspire children to read and give them access to the new, age-appropriate story books. We don't just drop off the books, rather we visit the school with volunteers and have an interactive session with each class. Sadly, many children in our communities have never owned a book before and most primary schools do not have a school library. We believe that book ownership is important in igniting a child's love for reading, so we give a new story book to each learner. We also place a Mini-Library with 50 new story books in every class. Children who love to read, will excel at school and go on to become constructive members of society. It all starts with reading. To date, we have conducted programmes in over 5,300 classes in Mitchells Plain, Makhado and Soweto, and given out over 238,000 new story books!
